TOGAF Architecture Development Method
The TOGAF® Standard, a standard of The Open Group, is a proven Enterprise Architecture methodology and framework used by the world’s leading organizations to improve business efficiency. We use this method to develop our client's Enterprise Architecture for Modern Workplace.
We follow the ADM sequence starting with Preliminary through the steps A-H, and this process will result in an Enterprise Architecture Design. This process may be iterative to allow for a phased implementation plan which might be easier to manage for very large or antiquated Enterprise Information Technology.
Although not part of the step sequence it is typically the first step as the Preliminary Step takes input from the Requirements is to ensure that every stage of a TOGAF project is based on and validates business requirements. Requirements are identified, stored, and fed into and out of the relevant ADM phases, which dispose of, address, and prioritize requirements.
Preliminary ADM Step
Prepare the organization for successful TOGAF architecture projects. Undertake the preparation and initiation activities required to create an Architecture Capability, including the customization of the TOGAF framework, selection of tools, and the definition of Architecture Principles. At Ion Management this stage is often produced as part of our Assessment and Proposal to our clients.
A - Architecture Vision
Set the scope, constraints, and expectations for a TOGAF project. Create the Architecture Vision. Identify stakeholders. Validate the business context and create the Statement of Architecture Work. Obtain approvals. For the Modern Workplace this stage is critical to ensure all stakeholders understand the benefits of a Modern Workplace.
B - Business Architecture
Develop architectures in four domains:
- Information Systems – Application
- Information Systems – Data
- Technology In each case, develop the Baseline and Target Architecture and analyze gaps
If the Modern Workplace is to be truly effective all business entities and processes must be considered.
C - Information Systems Architecture
Perform initial implementation planning and the identification of delivery vehicles for the building blocks identified in the previous phases. Determine whether an incremental approach is required, and if so identify Transition Architectures. D - Technology Architecture
In each case, develop the Baseline and Target Architecture and analyze gaps. This will include hardware, software, Command and Control, Network and cloud technologies. E - Opportunities and Solutions
Perform initial implementation planning and the identification of delivery vehicles for the building blocks identified in the previous phases. Determine whether an incremental approach is required, and if so identify Transition Architectures.
F - Migration Planning
Develop detailed Implementation and Migration Plan that addresses how to move from the Baseline to the Target Architecture.
G - Implementation Governance
Provide architectural oversight for the implementation. Prepare and issue Architecture Contracts. Ensure that the implementation project conforms to the architecture. Whether you do your implementation entirely in house or if you outsource the implantation to Ion Management or a hybrid where we each share in some of the effort (recommended) you can count on Ion Management and our Partners for the best possible outcomes.
H - Architecture Change Management
Provide continual monitoring and a change management process to ensure that the architecture responds to the needs of the enterprise, and maximizes the business value. One of the outcomes of an Architecture for the Modern Workplace is an ongoing Enterprise Architecture Governance process to ensure the results of the initial effort are not undermined by future accidental architectural changes.
As you can see the ADM is not a strict sequential process, you may need to Iterate between two or more Stages to complete the process, the only stipulation is that all stages should be addressed before completion.

The final result of the ADM is an Architecture Definition which as you can see here can vary from one approach to another.
